Job Description:
Job Summary:
SwRI supports government and commercial clients to develop new transportation technologies that change the world by reducing emissions and improving energy efficiency. Sophisticated modeling and control techniques are an enabling technology for these propulsion systems. This position is responsible for leading teams to deliver advanced control algorithms/systems/solutions for internal and external clients. This position reports to the Assistant Director and includes project, personnel and financial performance management. This position works with our Ann Arbor and San Antonio teams to promote SwRI's capabilities and solve problems. Lead, coach and develop a team of technologists, engineers and project managers who are developing and testing propulsion systems including: battery electric (BEV) and hybrid electric (HEV) powertrains, exhaust aftertreatment, thermal management, transmissions, engines. Develop high-fidelity physics-based models. Design experiments leveraging SwRI's 200+ test stands to ensure proper instrumentation, statistical significance to validate those models and develop effective control algorithms. Publish results. Submit invention disclosures. Help benefit the world through innovative science and technology.

Education/Experience:
Requires a PhD degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Aerospace Engineering or related engineering discipline, with a focus on control systems. Must have at least a 3.0 GPA. Must have at least 8 years total experience; 5 of which should be developing and implementing advanced control solutions. Ideally this experience is applied to propulsion or energy conversion systems. Must have experience developing control algorithms for multi-input, multi-output systems; ideally related to propulsion or energy conversion systems, but not required. Must have experience implementing algorithms in real-time hardware. Must have successfully led grant/project proposal efforts with commercial or government clients. Must have Project management experience. Must have excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must be highly motivated with a desire to manage multiple assignments concurrently with limited supervision. NOTE: Work assignment is in San Antonio, TX or Ann Arbor, MI. A valid/clear driver's license is required.
