The purpose of the Center for the Development of Therapeutics (CDoT) is to advance the Institute's diverse and growing number of exciting therapeutics projects. The mission of CDoT is to partner with researchers across the Broad community and external collaborators to: (1) drive forward Broad's therapeutics-focused projects (in areas including oncology, cardiovascular disease and diabetes, psychiatric disease, infectious disease, etc.); (2) provide a home for the Institute's cutting-edge therapeutics expertise and methods; and (3) provide outreach to enable smaller-scale efforts in chemical biology and screening at Broad. CDoT's current portfolio includes a wide-range of scientific projects being pursued with philanthropic partners, biopharmaceutical companies and other collaborators; the Broad is committed to continuing to build this portfolio over time.
As group leader of CDoT s automation team, you will lead a team of automation engineers working on automation infrastructure, as well as scientific therapeutics projects. You will assist with coordination of instruments, both automated and non-automated, across the department, including QC, service and maintenance contracts, methods development, and training. Additionally, you will work with other CDoT groups to identify needs and points of integration to achieve overall group goals and efficiency. You will communicate with other Broad groups to learn about other capabilities, applications, and best practices that may be of interest to CDoT, and shares CDoT knowledge with other teams. You will serve as point of contact with vendors to identify and evaluate the latest technologies that may improve CDoT workflows and makes recommendations for purchases and long-term platform improvements. Finally, you will lead the Automation team to support a portfolio of therapeutics projects by designing or applying innovations in therapeutics discovery technologies.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Oversees daily operations of the automation team
Acts as a leader of the Discovery Solutions and Systems group at CDoT, coordinates with leaders of Compound Management, Informatics and Screening, and represents the team across the Broad
Acts as a subject matter expert in the field of laboratory automation
Develops and executes automation strategic direction and budget by setting goals for the group based on established objectives, and ensures timely completion
Applies engineering/automation knowledge to innovate, design, and develop processes
Fosters creativity and innovation in solving complex process problems and designing efficient workflows
Administers and recommends changes to policies and procedures
Works with a multidisciplinary group of biologists, chemists, and engineers to optimize robust automated systems for use in a high-throughput screening laboratory
Maintains strong relationships with collaborators and industry partners
Implements and oversees team-wide process improvement projects. Consults with managers, staff, and stakeholders to identify and analyze equipment needs and coordinate maintenance of CDoT instrumentation, including financial aspects.
Interacts with multiple vendors to procure parts and evaluate new instruments and spearheads new technology projects and outside collaborations
Develops new components or methods, including software and hardware, to improve performance, efficiency, or applicability of existing instruments
Leads and participates in new technology evaluation, development and implementation to keep production platform current as technology advances
Provides leadership, mentoring, and training for automation team members, including recruitment and development of talent within the group
QUALIFICATIONS, EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
Required: Bachelor s degree in engineering with 10+ years of relevant job experience
Preferred: MS in Engineering discipline with 6+ yrs experience or MS in other disciplines (biology, computer science, etc.) combined with 6+ yrs relevant job experience
SKILLS / TECHNICAL KNOWLEDGE / CERTIFICATIONS
Strong team and project management skills and communication ability required
Demonstrated leadership skill in mentoring/coaching of junior level engineers required
Experience in biological assay development desired
Strong critical thinking, research, and analytical skills desired
Strong organizational and time management skills required
