Position Summary

J. J. Keller's Research & Development team is growing! We're adding a Mechanical Engineer to support growth and innovation in our Supplies line. This position is responsible for the design and development of innovative, new supplies products and updates/revisions to existing products to enhance product offerings, improve quality, minimize production costs and maintain a competitive advantage in the market. This includes utilizing CAD software for creating designs, determining materials, and working with internal and external manufacturers to produce products; ensuring quality and cost metrics are attained.


Job Responsibilities

  • Designs and develops new product lines from concept to launch using stage gate process and adhering to new product development processes.

  • Works cross functionally to improve current product lines.

  • Determines material and tolerance designation for products. Provides cost analysis and risk analysis for various options.

  • Creates and maintains documentation related new or updated designs for manufacturing processes.

  • Manages projects, prioritize and keeps all active production products flowing.

  • Participates in and/or leads cross functional design reviews.

  • Utilizes DFMEA and DVP&R to mitigate design risk and define appropriate validation methods.

  • Conducts and/or review the testing of new designs, interpreting test data and recommending necessary corrective action based on test data.

  • Transitions designs into production and provides production support to internal and external manufacturing resources.

  • Utilizes CAD as well as manufacturing system skills to create Engineering Change Orders in support of production improvements.

  • Works closely with corporate sourcing and manufacturing operations to minimize production and labor cost.

  • Generates product cost estimates for new products and engineering changes.

  • Develops initial concept drawings to support Product Portfolio new product development plans.

  • Assist contractors and 3rd party partners with tooling and fixturing.

  • Ensures standard practices and capabilities of 3rd party manufacturing partners meet the design requirements and are reflected in designs and drawings. This includes software troubleshooting calls, calling vendors, updating ECR's (Engineering Change Requests), contacting customers or addressing other questions as they arise.



Education & Experience:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.

  • 3+ years working as a mechanical engineer, including prior Product Development experience.

  • Prior experience using 3D design tools.

  • Prior experience with DFM (Design for Manufacturing) techniques.

  • Prior experience with Lean manufacturing or Six Sigma a plus.

Computer Experience:

  • Proficient with Solid Works and/or Pro Engineer.

  • Understanding of Finite Element Analysis.

Other Skills:

  • Self-directed and able to work effectively independently and within a team environment.

  • Possess a continuous improvement outlook and suggest, promote and champion product changes.

  • Advanced problem solving and analytical ability, with the ability to critically review and interpret technical documentation.

  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and to meet key deadlines and manage changing priorities through effective time management skills.

  • To translate abstract concepts into physical, testable prototypes.

Physical Requirements

Work is performed primarily in a standard office environment. Work involves operation of personal computer equipment for extended periods of time. Occasional travel to offsite offices, customer sites and/or industry and training events may also be required, depending on assignment.
