Systems Engineer (IT) – Columbia, MD


Shimadzu Scientific Instruments is one of the largest suppliers of analytical instrumentation, physical testing, and environmental monitoring systems in the world. Our products include Gas Chromatographs, Liquid Chromatographs, Mass Spectrometers, Total Organic Carbon Analyzers, UV-Vis Spectrometers, Fluorescence, Atomic Absorption, IR, X-Ray, and Universal Testing Machines. In 1975, SSI Corporate Headquarters was established in Columbia, Maryland and we currently have nine regional offices coast to coast.



The individual in this position is responsible for engineering and maintaining infrastructure and computing system hardware, operating systems, patches and other related components to ensure that all infrastructure systems are protected, optimized, communicating efficiently and in proper working order.  In addition, this position is responsible for maintenance of solutions that support disaster recovery and business continuity operations, 3rd tier help desk support of users and their technology solutions, and other related duties that may be assigned from time to time.


  1. Ensure all systems are properly maintained, including infrastructure systems, appliances, servers, workstations and laptops.

  2. Monitoring system configuration and performance to ensure data integrity and system stability.

  3. Maintenance of patch and update systems to ensure that connected devices are able to operate reliably and securely protected.

  4. Installation of new software releases, system upgrades, evaluation and installation of patches and resolution of software, hardware and performance related problems.

  5. Research and planning for upgrades and improving company technology resources using project management standards. Lead projects as needed and serve as a subject matter expert resource for initiatives lead by other team members. Collaborate and manage external resources leveraged to support SSI systems and solutions.

  6. Maintains systems in compliance with JSOX and internal IT standards including documentation of systems.

  7. Apply a working understanding of established security standards and operating procedures to ensure all systems operate with optimally secure configurations.

  8. Establishes and maintains backup and recovery processes for all infrastructure systems in support of disaster recovery and business continuity plans. Responsible for the protection and integrity of SSI systems and data using backup systems, imaging, and offsite vaulting.

  9. Maintain an understanding of relevant emerging technologies and trends in order to identify and recommend improvements to the environment.

  10. Administration of infrastructure services including management of DHCP, DNS and support of Network Access Control systems.

  11. Demonstrate a thorough understanding and support of network protocols and infrastructure solutions.

  12. Training and mentoring of team members and other employees as necessary.

  13. Providing 3rd level help desk support.

  14. Management of the help desk system to ensure appropriate routing of tickets, escalations and quality control.

  15. Create and maintain documentation related to system configuration and use.


This position’s primary focus is the support of network and server-based hardware and software; companywide – with the ability to manage multiple tasks, people and projects.

Incumbent is required to compare many courses of action in resolving problems and insuring the validity of data on all computer systems company wide.  Uppermost in these considerations will be the expected benefit to the company and its employees within stated limits.


Incumbent is required to have a bachelor’s degree, preferably in computer science or related field, coupled with four or more years of experience working in the networking and/or server systems field, or equivalent aggregate experience.  Verifiable competency in specific network and computer systems management, backup systems, and PC applications is also required.
