The Product Quality Engineer promotes customer satisfaction and loyalty by ensuring that products sold are safe, accurately described and in compliance with federal, state and industry regulations. Develops and implements technical quality guidelines and performance standards. Reviews supporting scientific technical studies and determines acceptable product claims for highly risk-laden products. Remains current on industry trending issues and regulations specific to gemstones and metal alloys. Develops and implements a Vendor Performance program to ensure that all suppliers understand and meet Evine’s quality related requirements. Builds strong cross functional working relationships and interacts collaboratively and effectively with legal, merchants, vendors and Quality Control.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Review technical reports and analysis, including claims substantiation, gemstone and alloy testing ensuring all products meet regulatory compliance.
Create testing methodologies and/or layer into the product evaluation process additional tests necessary to stay compliant and current with the changes in the jewelry and gemstone industries.
Liaise with QA, BG QC, Vendors, Merchants, Customer Service, Legal, and outside agencies on technical matters.
Perform factory audits (or contracts with qualified 3rd parties) for vendors with trending quality related manufacturing challenges.
Oversee product evaluations, with specific emphasis on establishing a base line for new vendor product quality as well as quality of product information.
Manage the most risk-laden categories such as base metal jewelry, synthetic and simulated gemstones, and “organic and/or sustainable” jewelry. Evaluation of such product will include review of product claims; partnering with Legal to ensure that claims meet all known FTC regulations, and are consistent with Evine’s current product description format.
Cultivate relationships with key industry organizations and regulatory bodies like JCK, third party testing facilities, and GIA. Stays current on regulatory requirements and industry developments.
Support brand management initiatives for Evine proprietary brands.
Develop and implement detailed, technical quality guidelines, performance standards, and specifications; collectively known as “requirements” for all concepts within the jewelry category.
Evaluate samples to determine compliance with requirements. Capture evaluation results in system and communicate to affected parties.
Train and guide jewelry Product Quality Evaluators/Technicians. Accept or reject products or establish conditions that must be satisfied for products to be accepted (i.e. determines what products will or will not be sold by Evine).
Establish procedures for handling customer-reported quality issues and determine if manufacturer responses are satisfactory.
Lead and/or advise corrective action to: Customer Solutions, Merchandising, Quality Control, and vendor partners for product sold that was not in compliance of Evine quality requirements.
Monitor negative product feedback (return rates, return reasons, customer contacts, and on-line Product Reviews and Ratings). Investigate root causes and implement corrective action plan. Essentially determine if products can be re-ordered and raise issues to management as necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS / KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES
Five (5) years of experience in a technical role in QA, QC, and/or product development in jewelry manufacturing.
Current industry knowledge of gemstone enhancements.
GIA Graduate Gemologist or equivalent experience
Strong and effective written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to understand technical gemstone/alloy testing documents.
Strong working knowledge of FTC laws and regulations.
Ability to manage processes and lead people.
Self-motivated, timely, reliable, and responsive to time urgent matters.
Strong decision-making, organization, and planning skills.
Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel.
