The Strategy, Technology and New Business Initiatives team is responsible for the identification, justification and entrepreneurial incubation and commercializing new sources of growth for the company while building leading edge competencies, approaches, and processes to make that a recurring capability.
The Managing Director will lead the entrepreneurial pursuit of new revenue generating entities for the company within strategically aligned growth areas.
Key emphasis will be on:
Working according to the department growth milestone process to systematically identify, develop, validate and grow new businesses.
Ability to build in-depth knowledge of adjacent industries and develop contacts, evaluate profit pools, and identify sources of disruption that may provide opportunities.
Leading all aspects of the development of the new businesses with accountability for its performance.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Develop in-depth knowledge of adjacent industries, including gathering knowledge about key players, strategic goals, value chains, sources of disruption, trends, technologies, start-ups and market potential.
Incubate a specific portfolio of new business opportunities and responsible for the performance of those initiatives. Develop and assess strategic alignment of the new business to existing business, and opportunities and risks to shareholder value.
Perform on-going analysis of emerging and adjacent market, product, competitive, and technology trends to identify new business opportunities specifically supporting, adjacent to or as diversification to core business lines.
With a focus on results and collaboration cross functionally, responsible for bringing new growth opportunities to fruition. Evaluate company assets, people, relationships, and skillsets that provide alignment and value to new business area. Work closely with a cross-functional team including Business Development, Finance, Legal, Operations, Site Leasing, and others to develop new business opportunities.
Identify and develop assets, partnerships or investments that will provide a sustainable advantage to improve the success of the new business. Seek out alliances, partnerships and industry relationships to enhance our position as a respected thought leader within the related industry and understand and articulate trends and implications for any investment in the new business area.
Develop business, financial, and operational plans for new business opportunities.
Develop and drive buy in for initiative budgets, and manage budget spend for development initiatives.
Identify acquisition targets as inorganic opportunities to accelerate growth of new business opportunities, conduct due diligence, manage negotiations, and oversee post deal integrations.

Education and/or Experience:
Undergraduate level qualification BA or BS required (i.e. Strategy, Marketing, Business, etc.) or equivalent business experience. Postgraduate level qualification MA, MS, or MBA preferred.
8+ years of business development experience preferably in Telecommunications and/or High Tech industries. Business understanding and working knowledge of the communication industry, systems, and networks, as well as, current and emerging technologies and standards is preferred.
10+ years’ experience in related consulting, entrepreneurial and/or business incubation.
Demonstrable skills and experience in at least one of the following areas:
Knowledge of Energy industry (i.e. alternative / clean / distributed energy generation, distributed energy resources, smart grid, and working with utilities.)
Knowledge of Cloud computing, IaaS, Paas, SaaS platforms and emerging Edge computing technology and business models, Co-location and hosting.
Knowledge of licensed/unlicensed wireless networks, low power IOT platforms, IOT sensor design, network gateways and business models pertaining to internet of things or M2M.
Extensive experience in start-up businesses and/or end-to-end product development experience, with entrepreneurial spirit.
Demonstrated knowledge and advanced proficiency working with Microsoft Office Suite software including Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Microsoft PowerPoint and Microsoft Outlook.
Ability to read, analyze and interpret financial reports and legal documents.
Professional verbal, written and presentation communication skills, methods inclusive of short and long-form business analysis and plans, data presentation and analysis, and PowerPoint presentations. Ability to tailor content to the level and experience of the audience, inclusive of Executives, internal and external partners, vendors and entities.
Strong interpersonal, presentation, and collaborative skills with a commitment to professional development.
Ability to use multiple channels or means to communicate important messages (i.e. memos, meetings, electronic mail) across the organization.
