SUMMARY

This Software Development Engineer’s responsibilities include designing, developing, and testing  software for medical devices.  This person should have a demonstrated ability in software programming.  Smart, motivated individuals have the opportunity to develop software used by surgeons in the operating room and for patients at home which has a direct effect on patient’s lives.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS


  • Function as a software development resource for Smith & Nephew medical devices.  These tasks include:

  • Read and understand software requirements and deliver quality software that meets the requirements

  • Design architectures and implementations to meet product goals

  • Be responsible for managing review and documentation of their own designs

  • Contribute to review of designs from colleagues

  • Debugging reported product issues

  • Developing new features to existing product

  • Investigate new technologies that could be used in future Smith & Nephew products

  • Assist with unit testing and validation of software applications and complete hardware/software systems

  • Provide continuous engineering support on assigned products to maintain and improve cost, margin, performance and quality

REQUIREMENTS

Travel

Domestic/International – Up to 10%

Education

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Engineering

Experience

At least 2 years in software design and development

Competencies


  • Instinct for Good Software Programming and Engineering principles

  • Excellent proficiency in one or more programming languages such as C/C++, Java, Javascript, Python, Swift

  • Thorough understanding of FDA and MDD design control requirements for electronic and software controlled devices

  • Experience performing software validation for medical devices

  • Excellent analytical, problem solving and organizational skills

Preferences


  • Experience in virtual and/or augmented reality software programming

  • Experience in mobile device application programming (iOS / Andriod)

  • Experience with medical device development processes and understanding of relevant standards such as IEC 60601-1, IEC 62304, IEC 62366, ISO 14971, ISO 13485, etc.

  • Quality and Health & Safety (QHSE) Responsibilities

  • Knows and adheres to the quality policy of the company and the quality-related procedures and instructions

  • Reports any deviation in product or process, of which he/she becomes aware, to his/her manager or the Quality department

  • Completes all necessary training in the area of Quality and GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice)

  • Immediately reports any dissatisfaction or complaint which is brought to their attention from a customer or patient regarding a Smith & Nephew product (e.g. in terms of quality, durability, reliability, safety or performance) to the complaints department

  • Complies with all health, safety and environmental policies, procedures and job hazard analyses applicable to specified job activities; including medical evaluations as required by job function

  • Completes all required HSE training
