Job Description:

POSITION INFORMATION: Provides primary care to
patients by performing the duties of an Advanced Practice Nurse (Nurse
Practitioner) and making diagnoses, establishing a plan of care, and
implementing the plan of care. This position is within the Division of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery and will work in the Adult Cardiac Intensive Care Unit.


REPRESENTATIVE
DUTIES:


  1. Physician
    Assistance
    .  Assists physician during
    the examination as needed.  Ensures that
    all information is available to the physician. 
    Accompanies physician on rounds and keeps informed of special orders
    concerning patients.

  2. Collection.  Collects samples
    from patients including blood, urine, etc. 
    Prepares samples for analysis or shipment.  Records various readings such as heart and
    respiratory rate, blood pressure, weight, body temperature, etc.  Collects all laboratory reports, data, and
    records.

  3. Patient Follow Up.  Schedules
    follow up patient appointments, or follows up on patient appointments.  Answers routine questions from patients,
    family, and care givers.

  4. Medication
    Administration
    .  Under direction of
    physician or other medical personnel, administers medication to patients.

  5. Collaboration.  Collaborates with other healthcare
    professionals to provide efficient quality patient care.  Evaluates and improves teaching and nursing
    practices and recommends modifications.

  6. Patient
    Education
    .  Provides educational
    information to patients, family, and care givers.  Counsels patients and family and care givers
    about death, side effects of medication, therapy, etc.

  7. Emergency
    Response
    .  Responds to and intervenes
    in emergency situations such as anaphylaxis, hypoglycemia, hypotension, hemorrhage, respiratory distress, etc.

  8. Personnel
    Supervision
    . Assumes lead role to ensure policies, procedures, and
    physician’s orders are followed.  Directs
    and evaluates the work of some personnel that may include Clinic Clerks,
    Medical Assistants, and other Nurses. 
    Trains and schedules workloads of employees.

  9. Patient
    Assessment
    .  Assesses and monitors
    patient response to procedures and treatments. 
    Reports patient condition and reaction to tests, drugs, treatments, and
    any significant incidents to the physician.

  10. Specialized
    Testing
    .  Performs specialized
    testing using physician-guided protocols to include but not limited to  Captopril suppression, water deprivation, etc.

  11. Instruction.  Instructs medical personnel in the use of
    highly specialized research equipment, drugs, etc.

  12. Research.  Participates in and contributes to research
    activities that are related to the area of specialization in which they are
    involved.  Participates in conferences
    pertaining to the research area.    

  13. Diagnosis.  Establishes
    diagnoses.  Evaluates collected patient
    data and collaborates with the attending physician, consulting services, and
    extended healthcare team to form a diagnosis.

  14. Care Plans
    Establishes the plan of care for patients by evaluating all pertinent
    information and collaborating with healthcare team.  

  15. Ordering.  Implements the plan of care by writing
    patient care orders when within the scope of the practice or by verbal order
    from the physician.  Orders diagnostic
    tests and procedures, medication, consultations, work-ups, etc.

  16. As Needed. 
    Performs various duties as needed to
    successfully fulfill the function of the position.

REQUIREMENTS:


Education:  Master's Degree in Nursing

 


Certifications:  Registered Nurse in the State of Oklahoma and
certified as a Nurse Practitioner by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing.
 Some positions may require certification in a
specialty area.
  Plus a CPR Certification.
