As an Estimator, you will prepare and/or coordinate estimates for assigned projects, including analyzing specifications, proposals, and other documentation. You will prepare portions of contract proposal estimates, to include the determination of applicable project plans and specifications and assist on larger and more complex projects throughout the region.


  • Review project plans, requirements, and specifications and assist in determining the scope of work and required contents of estimate

  • Review and understand project logistics and schedule

  • Assist risk and contract management responsibilities as required

  • Prepare discipline estimates by calculating accurate quantity takeoffs and materials pricing

  • Compare and analyze competitive subcontractor and supplier bids, reviewing and incorporating historical cost data into unit and man-hour figures

  • Liaise with vendors, JV Partners and other project stakeholders to formulate competitive estimates and resolve issues

  • Monitor client addendum and advise the project estimating team on changes during the estimate period

  • Where required, review design options and provide input on best solutions based on cost, engineering quality, or availability of materials

  • Assist in the review of the final estimate

  • Track changes in scope of work and monitor actual cost to estimated cost

  • Upon project completion, participate in debriefing with engineering and production teams to discuss lessons learned

  • Maintain files of working documents as back-up for estimate figures, including current (accurate) information on prices from suppliers and subcontractors


  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field from an accredited institution and 3+ years estimating & cost control or equivalent field experience and/or training

  • Or 5+ years related experience and/or training

  • Transferrable heavy civil construction experience is required

  • Advanced knowledge of HCSS Heavy Bid will be highly regarded

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills

  • Demonstrated aptitude to understand complex engineering projects

  • Familiarity with AutoCAD and other PC software packages typically associated with heavy civil construction engineering projects
