Expected Length of Internship:

  • Duration is flexible, beginning in early January 2019.  Must be available for longer than 3 months.

  • As an internship company, we allow flexibility to enroll in classes while working as an intern, as long as it doesn’t interfere with the essential functions of the position.


  • Ideally at least 1 previous internship worth of experience in a technical setting. 

  • Ideally some exposure to polymer science.

  • Ideally some exposure to materials characterization / testing.


  • Must currently be enrolled in a Bachelors, Master’s or PhD program who is fulfilling a graduation requirement for their degree.  Enrollment in one of following degrees are required for consideration:

    • Polymer science

    • Chemical engineering

    • Material science

  • First Solar encourages all interns to register with their University.

Required Skills/Competencies:

  • A high level of organizational skills is extremely critical. 

  • Good communication skills.

  • Looking for someone that is:

    • At home in a laboratory setting.  A lot of the work will involve performing mechanical, electrical, and other tests with adhesives, sealants, tapes, and films. 

    • Interested in sample preparation, testing, data analysis, and participating with the technical team to make decisions about next-gen materials that will be used in First Solar’s PV module.

    • Interested in participating in both pilot & production scale manufacturing trials.

    • Capable of proposing experimental plans to engineering, tracking results, and creating presentations.

Basic Internship Scope (Project):

  • The Materials Development group at First Solar is responsible for advancing material-related projects and know-how.  Scope includes development of new, high performance / low cost structural adhesives, sealants, films, tapes, potting agents, electrically conductive foils / tapes, and extruded metal materials.  This internship position will work with the engineering staff on a variety of these material systems to support priority initiatives.  In addition, at least one special project to be assigned.

  • Upon the completion of this internship, the intern is required to present their accomplishments and project summary to the leadership team.

  • Will sit, stand or walk short distances for up to the entire duration of a shift.

  • Will climb stairs on an occasional basis.

  • Will lift up to 51 pounds on a seldom basis, according to work instruction.

  • Will push or pull up to 27 pounds of force on an occasional basis.

  • Required to use hands to grasp, lift, handle, carry or feel objects on a frequent basis.

  • 20/40 vision in each eye, (with or without correction) and the ability to distinguish between red, yellow and green is required.

  • Must be able to comply with all safety standards and procedures.

  • May reach above shoulder heights and below the waist on a frequent basis.

  • May stoop, kneel, or bend, on an occasional basis.

  • Ability to wear personal protective equipment is required (including but not limited to; steel toed shoes, gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, protective jacket or apron and arm guards).

  • All associates working on the production floor may be required to wear a respirator at any given time and thus, the ability to wear a respirator is a condition of employment and continued employment (requires little or no facial hair).

Office Physical Requirements:

All positions in our office require interaction with people and technology while either standing or sitting.
