Job Description:

Assist the Director of University Residences as primary professional for cultural, residential and academic transitions through supportive cultural, social and educational communities actively involving student learning. Providing oversight for a campus community of approximately 1,745 of the 4,100 residential students, the Assistant Director of Residence Life / Equity and Inclusion is assigned responsibility for supervising four (4) resident directors. In collaboration with other department and campus colleagues, (i.e. Ethnic Student Center, Equal Opportunity Office, Human Resources, Counseling Center, and other campus representatives), this position will cultivate positive, nurturing and academically focused residential communities assisting in students’ success and satisfaction. Positive individual and community interaction is vital for students to benefit from diversity by together encouraging individuals as well as groups of students from diverse racial, ethnic, international, and domestic backgrounds in meaningful interactions. This person will assume programmatic leadership to student residential communities related to inclusion, diversity and inclusion initiatives. Additionally, this position serves in an on-call rotation with other department colleagues assisting with the coordination of student emergency responses. 

 

Staff Supervision 

  • Provide direct supervision and evaluation to 4 professional resident directors (RDs); indirect supervision for 1 full time assistant resident director and 38-43 undergraduate paraprofessional staff. RDs are each responsible for student staff supervision and training, educational and social programming, student leadership development including advising student governance groups, conduct adjudication, crisis response, and administrative processes in a residential community from 225 to 575 students.  

  • Through directing, coaching, mentoring, and evaluating staff, ensure staff perform assigned responsibilities in prescribed methods in accordance to standards established by department leadership. 

  • Regularly collect input from students, student staff and professional staff to provide annual formal evaluations, as well as on-going informal feedback.  

  • Meet regularly with each professional staff individually to facilitate effective job performance as well as provide on-going professional development. 

  • Assist RDs in developing and implementing residential programming, organized to create an atmosphere of self-directed learning and opportunity for working with other stakeholder offices in establishing positive student communities. 

 Equity & Inclusion 

  • Proven commitment to advancing diversity and inclusion in aspects of campus residential life. 

  • Develop culturally competent staff. Work closely with professional staff to ensure residential life staff are trained on issues of equity and inclusion, with particular emphasis on effectiveness in carrying out positional responsibilities in the residential environment. 

  • Provide leadership and coordinates departmental initiatives related to diversity and inclusive excellence including diversity education incorporation into all aspects of the residential experience. 

  • Support and advance departmental and institutional goals and values related to inclusive excellence. 

  • Develop strong collaborative relationships with other diversity resources on campus. Create and maintain strong connections with programs serving First Generation, LGBT, International, Muslim, Jewish and other entities supporting students. 

  • Assist director in establishing and leading the department of University Residences Diversity Committee composed of full time professional and classified staff.  

  • Work with residence life and departmental staff team as appropriate to plan and implement diversity programming and educational efforts for students such as Diversity Poster, NCORE, Staff Exchanges, Roundtables, etc. 

 Recruitment, Selection or Training 

  • Develop recruitment and selection processes for all professional and undergraduate staff. Work with supervisor to develop a strategy to fill residence life vacancies. 

  • Coordinate administrative paperwork and serve as a resource to search committee. Maintain close working relationship with University Residences department position regarding university hiring and payroll protocol. 

  • Coordinate administrative procedures and processes, social media and marketing campaigns for all recruitment efforts on and off campus. Represent University Residences and Residence Life at designated placement and recruitment conferences and events. 

  • Coordinate reapplication and assess returning staff intentions. 

  • Develop and implement a robust and consistent on-boarding program for all professional, graduate and undergraduate staff. Work with other offices and department to provide on-boarding training for new staff.  

  • Coordinate a new staff “buddy program” to provide support for new employees. 

  • Design, implement, and evaluate training program for all staff including coordinating events, speakers, consultants, meals, materials, and social activities to ensure implementation of all training programs. 

  • Develop and prepare all learning objectives, performance objectives, materials and manuals for training programs for all positions. 

  • Oversee the staff training committee; in assigning roles and tasks to all committee members reporting progress of committee work to the associate director.  

  • Develop, monitor and maintain the Department's budget for all training and staff development related initiatives. 

 Administrative Leadership 

  • Integrate diversity into development of programs, practices, policies and processes. 

  • Collaborate with other University Residences staff in long-term strategic planning, short-term coordination of operations, and more immediate problem solving. 

  • Serve as unit liaison for housing facility and maintenance related concerns. 

  • Ensure residence life staff complete administrative tasks accurately and on-time, and understand and adhere to all departmental and university policies, procedures and guidelines. 

  • Assist in developing residence life process and procedures 

 On-Call / After-Hours Responsibility 

  • With other residence life leadership team members, serve on an after-hours rotation to consult with on-call resident director and respond to emergent student and physical infrastructure concerns.  

  • Notify higher administration of incidents that are media worthy, involve significant harm/risk to safety to the residential campus student and staff community. 

 Other Duties 

  • Provide training and supervision to resident directors as they develop and execute programming budgets and advise student groups in budgeting and spending their funds

  • University Residence department committee(s) as appropriate 

  • Enrollment and Student Services Divisional committee(s) as needed 
  • Under leadership from the department’s associate director for business operations, assist associate director of residence life in the development and annual review of the residence life budget 

Required Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in college student personnel, student development, higher education, counseling, management, public administration, sociology or related field 

  • Three years full-time management or administrative experience in college or university residence education. 

  • Experience leading in a diverse and inclusive environment and a demonstrated ability to understand perspectives and experiences of people from historically underserved populations. 

  • Demonstrated collegiality and leadership ability. 

  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills,  as well as mediation skills.
  • Ability to train and educate others.  

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supervising full-time career-level educators (e.g. resident directors) 

  • Three to five years progressively more responsible supervisory experience in residential environments. 

  • Experience with crisis management. 

  • Professional, live-in residence hall or student housing staff experience. 

  • Experience planning, coordinating and implementing large-scale events and programs. 
  • Ability to apply current student learning and development theories and research.
