As a Laboratory Assistant you need to know how to:

Perform a variety of laboratory duties including venipuncture and waived to moderately complex laboratory testing procedures.

Perform venipuncture for adults, children and infants, including micro-collection techniques. Perform specimen procedures and collection procedures as required.

Process and prepare specimens for screening. Appropriately utilizes stains, fixative and reagents.

Receive and enter orders as appropriate. Enter patient data in test requisitions. Receive, label and deliver specimens. Process specimens for send out to referral laboratories. Monitors computer errors and maintenance of hardware. Enters results for referred specimens. Researches and resolves any questionable patient orders.

Review and evaluate completed tests for quality, accuracy, and completeness. Assists in maintaining the laboratory section to CLIA , CAP and Joint Commission standards and regulatory requirements. Performs proficiency testing as required by accrediting agencies.

Document and communicate information thoroughly and accurately. Utilizes equipment according to departmental guidelines, maintaining all equipment as per guidelines. Ensures equipment and supplies are maintained in appropriate working order. Evaluates and utilizes inventory appropriately, assists with inventory control as needed.

Assist with maintaining filing systems of slides, blocks, specimens, reports, requisitions. Prepares reagents and chemicals as needed. Utilizes clerical skills to perform job functions with minimal errors. Handles specimens/slides/logs/worklists appropriately and with confidentiality. Assists with point of care testing, reception, front desk, and phlebotomy duties as assigned. Assists/performs patient registration duties as assigned.

High School diploma or equivalent, required

Phlebotomy training, required

Laboratory work experience appropriate for duties, required.

Six months of experience in blood-drawing techniques, preferred

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, required

One (1) year of experience in a hospital setting, preferred

Bachelors degree or equivalent, knowledge of laboratory information systems, preferred
