Career Services provides services and programs to assist students and alumni to establish and clarify their personal, educational, and career goals and obtain career employment or seek admission to graduate or professional education programs following completion of their studies at Western. Services and programs include career counseling, career fair events, classroom presentations, declaring a major programs, employer relations, graduate school advising, interview preparation, job search services, mock interviews, networking services, and resume workshops.

The Career Counselor assists students and alumni in developing academic and career goals via career exploration, knowledge of WWU’s educational programs and consideration of personal interests, skills and values. The Career Counselor helps students understand the various ways they can leverage their experiences inside and outside of the classroom to prepare themselves to be competitive candidates for employment after graduation. With a focus on specific majors and a knowledge of job market conditions, the Career Counselor assists individuals in developing effective internship and job search strategies. The Career Counselor makes presentations to classes and student groups on career related topics and coordinates events such as workshops and panel presentations designed to help students expand their career awareness and connect with opportunities. This position also assists in providing academic advising and class registration assistance during new student orientation programs.


  • Provide counseling to assist individuals in:
    • Identifying potential majors and careers
    • Exploring career fields and job market conditions
    • Identifying ways to leverage their experiences in order to have a strong resume to present to employers
    • Developing effective strategies to identify internship and career employment opportunities
    • Master specific aspects of the internship / job search process such as networking, cover letter and resume writing, interviewing and salary negotiation
  • Conduct strategic outreach and presentations to departments, classes and student clubs to provide discipline specific career information
  • Coordinate workshops and panels with academic departments and campus programs and assist in the promotion of these events
  • Create and update materials for presentations and use by Career Center visitors and help keep specific content up-to-date on the web site
  • Participate in Transitions and SummerStart summer orientation programs as well as all off-quarter orientation programs

Required Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree or equivalent education/experience
  • Minimum of two years of experience providing career coaching and/or counseling to clients/students
  • Exhibit knowledge of web-based career and job search resources
  • Demonstrated experience in using career assessment and job search tools with clients/students
  • Demonstrated strong written and verbal communication skills including the ability to make effective presentations\
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively as a member of a team
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with diverse populations, including individuals from diverse cultural and social identities and backgrounds
  • Ability to apply strong organizational skills while managing multiple job responsibilities
  • Ability to display high degree of professionalism in interactions with clients/students and stakeholders
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office

Preferred Qualifications:


  • Previous relevant work experience in a higher education setting
  • Experience working with international students
  • Fluency in one or more additional languages other than English
