The Office of Public Affairs & Communications is responsible for telling the exciting and important story of UC Santa Barbara to the general public and our campus community. By working with local, regional, and national print and electronic news media, the office strives to generate press coverage of the extraordinary development of UCSB as a leading research institution and of the people, programs, events, and activities that distinguish the campus. In addition to its public information and press relations functions, the office designs and maintains the UCSB web site, produces major university publications, and publishes "93106," the faculty and staff newspaper, and "UC Santa Barbara Today," a magazine.

Summary of Job Duties
(Note: This summary will be used for keyword search) Science Writer
Provides multi-platform coverage of UC Santa Barbara with a focus on research and news related to all areas within the physical, biological, environmental and life sciences. Responsible for working closely with faculty members and researchers on a wide range of functions and tasks related to the presentation of UC Santa Barbara to the general public; the campus community; and local, national and international media outlets through a variety of digital and print means. Conducts in-depth reporting and produces long-form features; prepares press releases and media advisories; pitches news features to appropriate media outlets and responds to media inquiries; and identifies faculty experts and arranged media interviews.
* Bachelor's degree and/or equivalent combination of education and experience.
* Minimum of 5 years experience as a science writer.
* Journalist, or in a related communications field.
* Proven communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.
* Demonstrated writing, editing, researching, interviewing skills to produce news releases and features for newspaper and magazine formats.
* Demonstrated ability to work with diverse people; understand, interpret, communicate and articulate complex information; perform as an effective team member.
* Demonstrated ability to work independently, act with sound judgment and high degree of confidentiality, anticipate job requirements, prioritize and coordinate multiple complex tasks.
* Demonstrated ability to cover live news events and working on tight deadlines, produce feature articles and multimedia pieces.
* Demonstrated knowledge of social media.
* Proficient in various software programs.
* Willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed.
