Position description
The individual will contribute to the diagnosis, treatment and care of patients by accurately processing surgical pathology specimens.
Responsibilities include processing surgical pathology specimens; cryotomy and frozen section staining (H&E and Toluidine Blue); high complexity testing such as gross examination of surgical biopsies; equipment maintenance and record retention; training staff; knowledge of pathology Laboratory Information System and other duties as assigned.
The position requires participation as an assistant during autopsy procedures.
The individual is responsible for handling chemicals and/or reagents including chemical hazardous waste materials.
The position has rotating shifts. The last shift of the day is responsible for staying until the Surgery department no longer needs frozen section support, as determined by the attending pathologist. The position may involve travel between the Scottsdale and Phoenix campuses.
Qualifications
Associate of Science degree from an accredited college/university in histology, biology or having emphasized anatomical, biological, and chemical science; or meet CLIA-88 regulations (42CFR493.1487 through 1491) for high complexity testing and one (1) year histology experience; or successful completion of a NAACLS accredited Histology Program.
Additional qualifications
Excellent communication; organizational; problem solving skills and the ability to demonstrate good judgment when dealing with a variety of procedural and technical issues are required. The individual must demonstrate excellent troubleshooting skills as well as knowledge of basic anatomy and histopathology processes.
Two years as certified HT (ASCP) preferred.
License or certification
HT (ASCP) or eligible to be received within 1 year of hire with signed agreement.

Compensation Detail
Education, experience and tenure may be considered along with internal equity when job offers are extended. The minimum pay rate is $25.57 per hour.

Monday through Friday. Rotating 8 hours shifts, currently starting at 7:30am, 8:30am and 9:30am. The last shift of the day is responsible for staying until the Surgery department no longer needs frozen section support, as determined by the attending pathologist. The position may involve travel between the Scottsdale and Phoenix campuses.
Weekend schedule
Weekend coverage not currently required.
