Job Description:

  • Position Summary

    • Responsible for the delivery/pick-up of blood/blood products from hospitals, donor centers and mobile blood drives. Ensures that blood/blood products are transported according to AABB standards and prescribed Standard Operating Procedures. Accurately completes all documents associated with the delivery/pick-up. Responsible for communicating in a professional manner with Customer Service Representatives, supervisors, managers and external customers. Reports any customer concerns or discrepancies. Must maintain vehicle in a clean and smoke free manner. Completes daily driver log and route sheets. Completes and documents weekly vehicle inspection. Assists with the training of new drivers.


  • Position Responsibilities

    • Transports blood/blood products according to AABB standards and SOPs.

    • Receives direction from the dispatcher for hospital deliveries.

    • Checks to ensure products are properly packed and the delivery location matches the products prior to leaving the blood center.

    • Accurately completes all associated documents in accordance with established procedures.

    • Loads LifeSource vehicle with designated equipment as indicated on route sheet.

  •  Maintains a consistent and professional level of communication with Customer Service Representatives as well as customers.


    • Confirms every en route stop with the dispatcher.

    • Responsible for exemplary customer service, including reporting any customer complaints to supervisor/manager/director immediately.

    • Works in a cooperative manner with peers, supervisors, associated LifeSource staff and hospital personnel.


  • Consistently runs efficient and expeditious routes.


    • Is knowledgeable on the shortest/most efficient routes between locations.

    • Confirms every en route stop with the dispatcher.


  • Complies with vehicle safety requirements, weekly vehicle inspections and maintenance.

    • Reports accidents/incidents immediately and completes required paperwork according to policy.

    • Maintains a safe driving record.

    • Does not eat or smoke in the vehicle in accordance with ITxM policy.

    • Maintains vehicle/equipment with utmost care for company assets.


  •  Contributes to cleanliness and organization of the department.

    • Prepares ice bags, organizes box room and cleans transportation coolers as needed/directed.

    • Follows dress code and personal grooming guidelines.

  • Education and Training

    • High School diploma or equivalent.


  • Required Skills

    • Valid Illinois driver’s license and a safe driving record for the past 3 years.

    • The ability to follow directions.

    • Reliable and able to work independently.

    • Language skills must include the ability to read, write, speak and comprehend English effectively and follow oral and written instructions.


  • Physical Demands/Work Environment


    • Required to spend the majority of the workday driving, walking, lifting, bending, reaching, talking and hearing. 

    • There is a minimal amount of stooping and kneeling. 

    • Required to lift up to 50 pounds. 

    • Close, distance and peripheral vision required, as well as the ability to distinguish colors. 

    • Frequent exposure to blood and blood products, moderate exposure to extreme cold temperatures and minimal exposure to airborne particles, caustic chemicals and radiation.


  • License/Certifications

    • Valid in-state driver's license is required. Must possess a good driving record.

    • Medical Certification for Commercial Motor Vehicle (CMV) is required.
