Position Summary

Assist with the acquisition and editing of manuscripts for NYU Press in the social sciences (e.g. politics, sociology, and criminology) to publish; research, review, and evaluate prospective manuscripts; make recommendations to NYU Press Committee whether to publish selected manuscripts. Review copy, approve requests for changes, ensure correct language, grammar, syntax, spelling, to guarantee high-quality publications. Negotiate and persuade authors to approve revisions and suggestions for revisions; solicit peer reviews from specialist academic readers (Harvard, UCLA, etc.). Oversee related day-to-day publication operations (preparation of author biographies, book jacket information, etc.); correspond with authors and series editors to resolve related problems; discuss promotional materials for books with the author.

Qualifications

Required Education:
Bachelor's degree in the Social Sciences or other related subjects.

Preferred Education:
Masters Degree or Professional Certificate in Publishing

Required Experience:
2-3 years' publishing and editorial experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Experience:
Experience attending scholarly conferences for the purpose of editorial input.

Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Excellent organizational and written and verbal communication skills. Ability to interact in a professional manner with faculty, staff, students and external groups. Strong attention to detail and proofreading skills. Knowledge of standard office software and database packages.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
Experience with MS Office Suite, PageMaker, Excel and Conexus. Experience with FileMaker
