The Principal Gifts Stewardship Writer, in collaboration with the Director of Principal Gifts Stewardship, will develop creative, meaningful and highly personalized communications that steward Principal Gift Donors and advance their relationship with the University. The successful candidate will serve as donor relations project manager, editor, and writer for a variety of communications and marketing materials across multiple media platforms that largely impact Principal Gift Donors. In effort to provide personalized correspondence, gift acknowledgements, impact reports, and other materials, The Principal Gifts Writer will also work collaboratively with other members of the Development and Alumni Relations team. The the Principal Gifts Stewardship Writer will serve as a liaison to Principal Gifts and will work closely with fundraising and operations leaders responsible for that area.

  1. Manage the acknowledgment process for Principal Gift Donors and members of the Board of Trustees
    • Write personalized acknowledgment letters to Principal Gift Donors and Trustees ensuring that all gifts are acknowledged in a timely, accurate and meaningful way
    • Work in conjunction with Gift Officers to obtain input and approval on acknowledgements for their assigned prospects and with Principal Gifts operations to ensure that acknowledgements are coordinated with correspondence from other areas
    • Working in conjunction with the Director of Principal Gifts Stewardship, develop recommendations and template letters for signatories and personalization that are in line with best practices
    • Update project management tracking files in order to keep projects and collaborators on task
  2. Plan, write and produce stewardship reports for Principal Gift Donors
    • Research and develop compelling and creative narratives and clearly convey financial information to communicate the importance and impact of their philanthropy for stewardship reports
    • Develop, implement and regularly evaluate processes for effective collection from University collaborators, including students, faculty, staff, administrators and fundraisers
    • In coordination with Principal Gifts fundraising and operations develop and implement strategies utilizing the platform most appropriate for the audience
    • Ensure timely and appropriate financial and impact reporting and meet other ad hoc reporting needs
    • Work with other Donor Relations team members to develop opportunities to repackage content in other written and digital materials
    • Conduct research and benchmarking to incorporate best practices and innovations in stewardship to offer new and creative materials for donors
  3. Plan, write and produce meaningful recognition for Principal Gift Donors
    • Research and develop compelling and creative gift announcements, recognition stories, or special communications that convey the importance and impact of their philanthropy
    • Serve as copywriter, editor, or quality check for recognition of principal gift donors from other areas of the University
    • Work closely with the Principal Gifts team, other donor relations staff and the communications team to coordinate other communications and materials recognizing Principal Gift Donors
  4. Edit and proof Principal Gift stewardship materials
    • Address questions or concerns with authors
    • Edit and proof copy to ensure that it is in line with University style guide and branding and that best editorial standards are met
    • Partner with Principal Gifts team to ensure content is strategic and targeted
  5. Utilize strong interpersonal skills to manage collaborator and client expectations
    • Develop and maintain strong working relationships with internal and external designers, photographers, printers and vendors for various stewardship projects
    • Stay abreast of best practices in communications and personalized stewardship
    • Contribute to a culture of high performance, excellence and quality

  1. Bachelor's Degree in English, Journalism, Communications or a related field; Master's degree preferred
  2. Three to five years related work experience
  3. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  4. Solid writing ability and organizational skills
  5. Solid analytical, decision making and problem solving skills
  6. Solid computer skills with experience using word processing and spreadsheet software; design experience is desirable
  7. Successful completion of standard background checks including but not limited to: social security verification, education verification, county and national criminal background checks, PATCH, FBI fingerprinting, Child Abuse Clearance. Based upon the requirements of the position Lehigh may also request credit history reports, motor vehicle checks and professional license/certification verification

Special Considerations:
  • Occasional evening, holiday or weekend hours
  • Occasional travel is required primarily for training, conferences or events
  • Finalists will be required to complete a writing assignment

FTE: 100%

Grade and Hiring Minimum:
