Physical Demands: The work requires manual dexterity, flexibility, and some assignments which require considerable, strenuous physical exertion, which may require lifting of objects 50 pounds or more. Much of the time is spent inventorying and processing evidence which requires walking, bending, stretching, crawling, and lifting.
This position is designated as "emergency". As an "emergency" employee, you may be expected to report to work during periods of adverse weather conditions or other types of emergency situations when it is announced that an "unscheduled leave policy" is in effect or that federal agencies are closed in your immediate vicinity.

Major Duties:
GS-07:
  • Serves as Information Technology (IT) Forensic Examiner Trainee.
  • Conducts routine forensic examinations of computer related evidence using established policies, procedures and precedent techniques.
  • Communicates orally in order to convey ideas and recommendations.
  • Prepares and presents reports of findings of forensic examinations.
GS-09:
  • Conducts routine forensic examinations of computer related evidence using established policies, procedures and precedent techniques.
  • Collects and prepares digital evidence for forensic examination.
  • Develops and provides evidence collection and examination methods to field offices and outside law enforcement agencies.
  • Identifies, diagnoses, and corrects errors and problems.
  • Testifies in legal proceedings as to the procedures and methods used to obtain data.
  • Prepares and presents reports of findings of forensic examinations.

Positive Education Requirement
This position has a specific education requirement; all applicants must verify completion of this basic educational requirement by submitting a copy of their college transcripts by the closing date of the vacancy announcement.
B ASIC REQUIREMENTS Applicants must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university with at least 20 semester hours in one or more of the following disciplines: computer science, information systems analysis, science/technology, information management, mathematics, computer engineering, or electrical /electric engineering: AND
1. Applicant has had experience that demonstrates accomplishments of computer project assignments that require a range of knowledge of computer requirements and techniques. For example, assignments would show on the basis of general design criteria provided, experience in developing modifications to part of a system that require significant revisions in the logic or techniques used in the original development. OR
2. Applicant has completed the following technical courses or equivalent: A+ Certification Personal Computer Hardware Course; Network + Certification, CCNA Certification, MCSE Certification; FBI Computer Analysis Response Team (CART) Field Examiner Certification Course.
EXCEPTION: FBI employees applying for any grade level who do NOT have to meet the degree requirement mentioned above must meet the following:
FBI applicants who were active Computer Analysis Response Team (CART) Forensic Examiners (FE), Forensic Examiners in Training (FET) or CART On-The-Job Trainees (OJT) as of 2/15/2002;
Each candidate must meet the certification requirements of the FBI Operational Technology Division upon completing the CART FE Training program, which includes the demonstrated ability to use software utilities, demonstrated ability to acquire digital evidence ability to conduct forensic exams of digital evidence and obtaining A+/Net+ certification.
IN ADDITION: Each candidate must successfully complete and pass an assessment test on forensic capabilities before certification. Inability to meet these requirements may warrant removal from the program.
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: In addition to meeting the basic requirements above, applicants must meet the qualifications as defined below:
Qualifications for the GS-07 level: Applicant must possess one (1) year of Specialized Experience (SE) equivalent to the GS 05 level. SE is:
  • Experienced in programming language codes, operating IT consoles, monitors, and/or installing, maintaining, configuring, or optimizing operating systems, databases or networks.
  • Communicated orally regarding IT matters.
Qualifications for the GS-09 level: Applicant must possess one (1) year of Specialized Experience(SE) equivalent to the SG 07 level. SE is:
  • Determined hardware/software capabilities.
  • Performed data searches and retrievals from storage devices and protected media; copied evidence, ensured chain-of-custody and storage of evidence.
  • Communicated orally regarding IT matters.
Education:
Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above requirements provided you can show foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
All degrees must be from an accredited college or university. Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows:
GS-7: Applicant must have a bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement or one (1) full year of graduate level education. Superior academic achievement is the completion of all the requirements of a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, which is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average of 3.0 or higher as recorded on an official transcript, or as based on courses completed during the final two years of the curriculum, or (3) honor society membership.
GS-9: Applicant must have a master's or equivalent graduate degree or 2 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree or LL.B. or J.D., if related.
