Job Description:

As head of the Creative Services team, the Creative Services Director is responsible to lead, guide and manage the creative teams of the Exhibitions Division. The Director sets the standards and ensures the teams can efficiently and effectively meet those standards - in providing meaningful visitor experiences at the Aquarium and high quality and engaging experiences wherever they can be found.
With oversight from the Vice President of Exhibitions, this position is responsible to match the appropriate creative teams to the organizational needs and provide direction, guidance and management oversight for these creative teams. The Creative Services Director will provide direct oversight of the Design, Research & Development and Film and Video departments. And as part of the division's leadership team, the Creative Services Director will help develop and implement organizational strategy for the entire division - including budget development.
Core Responsibilities
Provide creative direction for Exhibitions projects and creative teams
Responsible for providing general management of the Design, Research & Development and Film & Video departments - including personnel management and leading the planning and development of annual operating budgets and work plans for departments
Develop and manage an efficient and transparent work intake process - including estimation, prioritization, communication and quality assurance
As part of the leadership of the Exhibitions Division, participate in division-wide planning and participate in Aquarium-wide planning processes, as requested
Work with Exhibitions staff and managers to regularly and effectively communicate work progress to stakeholders, staff, management and board
Establish, communicate and implement the creative development processes and norms
Develop the creative culture to support collaboration and innovation
Working with creative staff and project managers to develop estimates, action plans, schedules and budgets for proposed and assigned projects
Lead the development of staffing plans for projects
Observe and monitor progress and quality of project work, budgets and schedules
Work closely with the Monterey Bay Aquarium management staff to coordinate Exhibition planning and project team activities with other essential operations of the departments
Provide assistance, as required, in preparation and management of contracts including scope, schedules, terms and conditions and fee basis; also participate in contract negotiations as required
Absolutely Required Skills / Knowledge / Ability / Experience or Education
Bachelor degree
Minimum of 7 years' experience supervising, leading and managing diverse creative professionals
Minimum 5 years' experience providing creative direction for complex public-facing experiences
Production of concept design, schematic design, design development and construction/fabrication/production documents
Ability to take the responsibility for the development of several complex projects concurrently
Able to take initiative and prioritize tasks; excellent time management, problem prevention and problem solving skills
Flexible in responding to changes in priorities
Proven ability to work effectively and efficiently under multiple, competing deadlines
Ability to bring clarity to ambiguous environments and drive a team forward
Experience managing the character, quality and cost of construction/fabrication materials and equipment
Knowledge of architectural and technical detailing, construction, fabrication and production technology and equipment
Competency in a "Windows" computer environment using MS Word, Excel, Access, Project etc.
Understanding of and competency with industry-standard programs and software; proficient at Adobe Creative Cloud environment applications (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat) and architectural drawing programs (AutoCAD and 3D drawing software); working understanding of AVID video editing software
Strong multi-tasking abilities required to facilitate multiple complex projects with constant attention to detail
Meeting management skills
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Skills and experience making compelling presentations to diverse audiences: staff, colleagues, senior managers, donors, experts, boards
