The Laboratory Technician will perform routine medical laboratory tests for the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Laboratory Technician provides required technical support to enable the laboratory to function effectively while adhering to correct procedures and health and safety guidelines.

Principal Responsibilities The Laboratory Technician will: Perform specimen collection using appropriate, established procedures according to department protocol. Procedures may include venipuncture and capillary draws, blood cultures, heel or finger sticks, POC testing, ECG exams and special techniques for difficult, pediatric or geriatric patients. Efficiently label and process specimens according to established policies and procedures. Work closely with laboratory users to verify patient orders, collections and results. Complete (charge) or cancel/discharge (credit) specimens in Cerner to ensure accurate and compliant billing. Review pending logs and interface transaction monitor to ensure results are populating patients' medical records in Power Chart. Distribute laboratory reports to physicians' inboxes and offices including faxing and retrieval of test results from SRAlab and/or NMH databases. Accurately reprint results and forward to medical records for scanning into patient's chart. Document all notifications and chart appropriate data to the patient's medical record per department specific criteria. Handle and dispose of potentially hazardous material. Follow all infection control policies, especially when drawing patients in isolation. Maintain safe and clean work environment by utilizing personal protective equipment and safety devices appropriately. Participate in Safety and Infection Control activities. Stock and monitor inventory of laboratory supplies and promptly notify management of shortages. Perform all other duties that may be assigned in the best interest of SRAlab. Perform ECG exams per physician orders for transmittal to NM Cardiology interpretation Reporting Relationships Reports directly to the Manager, Diagnostic Services. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required High school diploma or equivalent. Certification from an accredited medical phlebotomy program, medical assistant program or equivalent. A minimum of one year of experience performing phlebotomy on a broad range of patient types in a hospital setting. ECG experience preferred. Prior work experience in pathology, laboratory support or health-related position. Familiarly with medical terminology, billing and coding preferred. Ability to effectively use a personal computer and working knowledge to perform data entry and analysis. Experience with Cerner Healthcare Information system a plus. Communication and interpersonal skills necessary to interact with patients and customers in various circumstances. Ability to collaborate effectively in a team setting in order to maximize quality and efficiently of operations.
