We are currently seeking highly motivated Software Engineers that have a passion for solving challenging problems to join our Outdoor Recreation Map Technology team at our headquarters in Olathe, KS.  Our Map Technology Software Engineers are responsible for the analysis, design, development, and testing of the PC-based tools that are required to generate our map products.  Many of them also participate in the development of the software to implement our mapping technology in Garmin's embedded devices. 


You will also be responsible for these key functions:

  • Design PC-based software to support Garmin's creation and use of map data in embedded navigational devices.  Typical tasks may involve GUI design, database design, data format conversion, cartographic process automation, parallel processing algorithms, computational geometry, geo-spatial indexing, data compression, path finding, or 3D representation and visualization

  • Use state of the art development tools to write and test software in C and C++

  • Design highly efficient data structures to represent map features in a manner that achieves both our performance and space utilization goals 

  • Perform research into innovative technologies that will help maintain Garmin's position as a world leader in cartographic development

  • Perform maintenance activities for products and technology already in production

  • Assist with the evaluation of cartographic data sources to determine their suitability for use in Garmin's systems

  • Participate in product definition activities including feature analysis and system tradeoffs

  • Analyze third party libraries and algorithms to determine their suitability for use by Garmin

Qualified candidates for this role will possess the following education, experience and skills:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Math or Physics or a technical field (such as CIS or IT) from a four-year college or university AND a minimum of three years relevant experience OR an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience

  • Outstanding academics (cumulative GPA greater than or equal to 3.0 as a general rule)

  • Demonstrates proficient knowledge and utilization of engineering tools necessary for successful performance of the essential functions of this job description

  • Must demonstrate proficiency and possess experience necessary to develop moderately complex software in C and C++.

  • Demonstrates mastery of relevant software engineering tools (configuration management systems, build processes, debuggers, emulators, simulators and logic analyzers)

  • Must demonstrate proficient ability to capture and document software requirements

Candidates with education and/or experience in QT, Boost, STL, SQL Server, XML, Distributed Applications, Artificial Intelligence, Computational Geometry, Data Compression and/or Software Performance Optimization are preferred.
