Job Description:

Tribal Health Organization family physician caring for a diverse population of tribal members, veterans, and other Kodiak Island community members, dedicated to full-patient care across the age spectrum. Includes clinic, remote village travel, and occasional home visits. Provider may choose to practice inpatient medicine and/or obstetrics. Will develop a patient continuity panel, and care for this panel with colleagues support. Outpatient care is delivered in a patient centered medical home and a team-based model of care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
This physician will join an engaged and cohesive medical staff supported by a strong and thoughtful leadership team in the delivery of patient-centered care by evidence-based standards. The administrative support for this position is focused on provider health and support in the context of continuity family medicine delivered in a high-quality, patient-lead manner. We are dedicated to elevating the quality of life of our population and community members.
Medical Services:
Patient-centered family medicine physician caring for the Kodiak community, with special attention to the Tribal and VA populations. Provider will develop a continuity panel of patients across the age spectrum from newborn to geriatric.Outpatient services are delivered in clinic and/or by telemedicine. Physician will periodically attend clinic in remote villages accessible by small plane. Provider will occasionally attend home visits, and may elect to see patients in a nursing home location. Clinic visits will be acute and chronic care visits, with attention to caring for care team patients needs. Clinic days will generally be scheduled 16 encounters / clinical day (4 clinic days weekly, may include Saturdays), although provider will be flexible to accommodate patient and team needs, and may occasionally see more patients on a clinic day if needed. Will participate in after hours phone call consultative service for village providers. This will be phone calls only; overnight call volume is approximately one every 2 weeks. May choose to participate in inpatient medicine call and/or OB & pediatrics call. Inpatient Medicine: may participate in inpatient call pool up to every 6 weeks if desired.Inpatient OB/pediatrics: may participate in OB inpatient/deliveries with newborn / pediatric admission service if desired. Focus on team-based, patient-centered care. Will work closely with RNs, MAs, front desk staff, and administrative support staff in addition to provider colleagues. Will also collaborate with other patient support services across the organization. Correctly and completely documents entries and maintains patient charts in a timely manner as outlined in the KANA Medical Clinic policies and procedures.
Colleague support:
Interacts with all colleagues and learners in supportive, productive manner. Physicians lead our clinical teams through thoughtful communication with clinical and administrative colleagues and modelling of excellent customer service to patients and their families. Support of clinical colleagues in the delivery of patient care includes physicians, PA and NPs, CHA/Ps, RNs, MAs, and other support staff in person, by phone, and through secure texting and EMR communications. Clinical colleagues often talk over cases together in a collaborative environment. Will support care team patients and colleagues as needed, including periodic inbox coverage when colleagues are unavailable. Will encourage and support colleague work-life balance while working as a team to meet patient and clinical care needs. Communicates effectively with patients, colleagues, and other KANA staff. Addresses patient and staff needs courteously and promptly.
Education:
Will participate in education of medical students and residents in rotation with other physician colleagues. Will be an engaged and enthusiastic educator for our medical students and residents along with the other providers. Will precept in clinic and, if in call rotations, in the hospital. Will serve as a champion for family medicine when working with learners, and will intentionally demonstrate respectful and dynamic provider-patient relationships.
Administrative:
Proficient and efficient use of EMR (Cerner, Epic). Timely electronic communication, inbox management, chart completion, results review & communication to patients. Remains current in the field of medicine and practices up to date medicine as established by national standards (ACOG, AAFP, CDC, etc), with practical application based on patient preferences and clinical environment. Maintains licensure and other credentials as required, including BLS. If working in the hospital, may need ACLS, PALS, NRP, and/or ALSO. Will be a steward of healthcare resources by following protocols for patient specialty consultation and referrals within and outside the Alaska Tribal Health system. Works closely with the Purchased and Referred Care program and care team referral navigators as needed to ensure patient has access to most appropriate care. Accurately and promptly provides coding, billing or other financial information to KANA billing team and follows up insurance requests as required.Will be attentive to continuous quality improvement. Actively participate in and embrace KANAs continuous quality improvement projects and activities. Continually strive to improve patient experience and quality of care with attention to patient access, continuity, team-based care, patient-lead care, and community engagement. Participate in peer review sessions with other providers. Monitors and shares necessary information to facilitate risk prevention activities with administrative team. Attends all OSHA, HIPAA, and other regulatory compliance training as directed or required. Represents KANA in a positive and respectful manner in all circumstances including with staff, community members, colleagues, and professional organizations. Coordinates and participates in community outreach programs, serves on KANA committees, serves on hospital committees, fully engages in the health of Kodiaks community. Will often manage multiple tasks simultaneously, including telephone, computer operations and in-person visits while maintaining thoughtful communication with team members and patients.Support the organizations mission and goals, quality standards, and patient-centered medical home philosophy. Supervisory Responsibilities This job has no formal supervisory responsibilities over KANA employees, but the physician will provide quality education of students and residents, and will be engaged in clinical quality management of village and town-based staff. The physician is a team leader, and will be expected to engage and work with their team as such.
