Using JOFDAV
Job Search Tips
Questions from Job Seekers
We try to answer all of the questions that we receive from
job seekers. When we think our answer may be helpful to someone else, we will
post it here.
Are employers really looking for disabled people?
How soon will I hear from an employer?
(I just posted my
Resume on JOFDAV.)
How do I access the job listings from Employers on your
Site?
Are employers really looking for Disabled American Veterans?
Employers aren't looking for
Hispanic Americans. If they were, you could turn to your newspaper’s classified ads
and see “Hispanic Americans Wanted”. But you don’t see that. What you will see is
“Sales Manager Wanted”, “Software Engineer Wanted”, etc.
Employers aren’t looking for
Hispanic Americans; but they are looking for people who can fill their job openings –
whether or not they are Hispanic Americans.
Many employers are now “proactive” about hiring
Hispanic Americans. These are the kinds of
employers that are actively supporting JOFDAV – so get your resume
posted and look through the job postings!!!

How soon will I hear from an
Employer?
There is no easy answer to that… maybe
tomorrow… unfortunately, maybe never. What is important that if an employer who
is looking for your skill set does use JOFDAV – they will find you! But,
JOFDAV needs to be one of many tactics in your entire job search
strategy.
We hope that
JOFDAV will be successful
for you; but statistics still suggest that only about 10% of jobs are filled
from Online hiring. So, keep updating your resume and looking through the job
postings on JOFDAV; but also continue all of your other job search
efforts.
Did you know that more than 50% of people still
attribute their hiring to leads from friends and/or family? This is called
“networking”! Be sure to let everyone know that you are looking for work! Make
everyone part of your personal job search “Team”. Don’t forget your Hairdresser
and your Grocery Clerk!
Did you know that the movie about Erin
Brockovich was made because Erin’s chiropractor was also the chiropractor for
the wife of a movie producer – and passed on Erin’s stories to her?
Most communities have one
or more Agencies that provide employment and training services to Hispanic
Americans. Be sure to take advantage of any help that they can offer you. If
you don’t know where to start, we will soon have a directory of those agencies
on our site! In fact, many of them will be using JOFDAV to support their own
services.

How do I access the job listings from Employers on your Site?
To access the job listings,
you first have to sign in as a Job Seeker. (If you haven’t already done so, you
will have to register first.)
Once you have signed in,
you will be on your personal “Home Page”. Here you will see a list of “Available
Categories”. Any job category that is underlined has job postings open. Just
click on the category, and you will get a list of the current postings.
Another way to Search, is
to look in the “My Career Manager” Box on the left. Click on “Search Jobs”. Now
you can look for any jobs that match your interests.
First, select the
location(s) to look in. You can select one location or, up to five locations.
(To select more than one location, click on the first one – then, while holding
down the Ctrl key on your keyboard, click on up to 4 more that you want to
select. All of your selected locations will be highlighted.) Also, if you want,
you can just choose “All” and every location will be part of your search.
Second, select the “Job
Category” that you are interested in. (You can only select one Category for each
search.)
Fourth, if there are any
“keywords” that you want to look for, type them in. (NOTE: If you don’t have any
specific keywords to look for, just leave this blank.) If, for instance, you are
trained in the use of PeopleSoft software, and you want a job that requires
PeopleSoft skills, type in “PeopleSoft” and you will only get postings that have
“PeopleSoft” in them.
Finally, hit “Submit”. All
the jobs posted in our data base will be searched and you will get a list of the
ones that match your criteria.
Whatever way you search the
jobs, if one of them looks interesting to you, click on its title to see the
full details. If it is one you would like to apply for, just click on “Apply”
and your resume will be sent straight to the company. (Of course, you will have
had to post your resume first.)
Does that all sound
complicated? It is actually quite easy! After one or two searches, you’ll be an
expert. Remember the jobs in our data base will change regularly – so make a
point of coming back, every so often, to check for new ones!
