Job Description:

We are seeking Pipe Layers to join our team! The Pipe Layer, commonly called Hill Man, is an entry-level pipe layer within the Site Division and must understand the utility installing procedure, including demolition, utility locating, excavation, pipe installation, backfill and compaction, and site restoration.

The Hill Man is a crew member outside of the excavation; and performs duties including but not limited to chaining pipe, retrieving tools, backfilling and compacting, cutting pipe, utility locating, spotting for aerial obstacles, and excavation cleanliness.

Responsibilities:


  • Demolition: clearing of material and structures in conflict with proposed utility installation

  • Utility Locating: Locating utilities that are known/unknown to be present within an excavation site by way of hand digging and/or hydro excavation.

  • Backfill and Compaction: Placement of Earth materials in the excavation after the utility has been installed. Assisting pipe crew with hand-grading of backfill material. Operate hand tools such as shovels and tamps and small power-operated compaction machines such as plate tamps and jumping jacks.

  • Site Restoration: Bring site to specified finish.

  • Chaining pipe: Fastening pipe to machinery via sling, harness, chain, cable, etc., for safe placement into the excavation.

  • Cutting pipe: Fabricate different kinds of utility pipe per the direction of the Site Manager of designated individual with hand saw, chop saw, Sawzall, chain cutter, chainsaw, etc.

  • Spotter for aerial obstacles: Assist the Equipment Operators by watching blind sports and identifying and avoiding obstacles that could interfere with the operation of the heavy equipment.

  • Excavation Cleanliness: while working outside of the excavation, keep the work area clear of debris and items that have a potential to fall into the excavation. Monitor trip hazards.

Must be willing and able to perform physical labor as directed by a manager or another designated individual. Additional duties include manually digging ditches, performing demolition work, and job site clean-up.

As a Pipe Layer, you must possess an intermediate understanding of site work procedures, including earthwork, site development, pipe-laying, and site concrete. You must must be able to perform duties including but not limited to chaining and unchaining pipe, backfilling and compacting, cutting pipe, utility locating, mud work, and the installation of various utilities to include water pipe, sewer pipe, fire pipe, storm pipe, and conduits. The Pipe Layer is proficient in the installation of all storm piping, water piping, sewer piping, fire piping, conduit piping, bore piping, and service piping. The Pipe Layer understands laser grading, fully prepares the ditch for utility piping, constructs brick/mud work for storm manholes, and directs in-trench dewatering operations and compaction operations.


  • You must be able to use all relevant hand, power, cutting, and drilling tools of the trade.

  • Must successfully pass a pre-employment drug screening test and agree to comply with all company policies including the company’s drug-free workplace policy.

  • Must be OSHA competent in Trench Safety and Confined Space Entry (CSE).

  • Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds and able to push/pull up to 75 pounds.

  • Must have excellent communication skills and be able to follow directives.
