Type: Full-Time
Location: Medford, Massachusetts

Job Description:

The Provosts Office seeks a resourceful individual with superior communication, organizational and problem solving skills to fill the available position of Assistant Provost. The Provost & Senior Vice President is the Chief Academic Officer of the University, in charge of the education and research missions of the university, and is second in command after the President. He oversees the nine schools and colleges at Tufts. His duties include: recruiting deans and faculty; tenure and promotions; driving fundraising and budgetary priorities; advancing diversity; raising resources; and managing the International Board of Overseers. He works closely with the Academic Affairs Committee of the Board of Trustees to ensure the quality and integrity of the university's programs and policies. Through the work of the Vice Provost and Associate Provosts, the Provost's Office is also responsible for the cross-school programs, the library system, research administration and industry partnerships, international collaborations, institutional research and assessment, and the ten Boards of Overseers.

The Assistant Provost for Academic Affairs reports to the Vice Provost. His/her overall responsibilities are to support the Provost & Senior Vice President, to assist the Provost in the day to day management of the office and its projects, and to serve as the chief of the Provost's Office support staff. The position involves a multifaceted set of duties. Principal among them is managing the workflow and communications involved in the appointment, tenure and promotion of faculty. This entails working closely with the academic affairs officers in the schools, and with the Trustees office, Human Resources, and the legal counsel's office. It requires developing a mastery of the policies and procedures involved (as specified in the by-laws of the Trustees and of the Schools), and preparing materials for and taking minutes at the Trustee Academic Affairs Committee meetings.

The Assistant Provost position also includes responsibility for ensuring that deadlines are met, projects are moved forward, and pending items (such as proposals for new academic programs) are ushered through the system. Problem solving and follow up - on a broad spectrum of issues - are critical components of this position. The effectiveness of the office depends upon this person's ability to work and communicate with, and be a resource for, people at all levels across the university and its constituencies in a collegial, collaborative and service-oriented fashion. These constituents include: the Office of the President; the Office of the Vice Provost; the Associate Provosts; the Deans, VP's and their staffs; faculty; students; alumni; parents; and donors. Of particular importance is follow-through on matters relating to the Office of Advancement, as well as pro-active work on the development of and communication with the International Board of Overseers. The Assistant Provost also manages the agenda for the Provost's Council, which consists of Deans and other senior officers.

Basic Requirements:

  • *Bachelor's degree
  • *Five plus (5+) years of related experience
  • *Must be skilled in Microsoft Office, particularly Word and Excel; knowledge of transferring confidential documents on protected shared drives from schools to Trustees Office
  • *Strong written and oral communication skills; excellent organizational skills; the ability to multitask and work under stress if necessary; and supervisory experience
  • *Ability to work independently without direct supervision; to exercise good judgment and discretion; to maintain confidentiality and work with sensitive information

Preferred Qualifications:An advanced degree and five to ten (5-10) years of progressively responsible experience in higher education administration are preferred. The ideal candidate will possess an understanding of academic culture, and proven success in working with multiple constituencies in a collegial, collaborative and service-oriented fashion.
