Primary Function of Position:

Intuitive Surgical, Inc. designs and sells the da Vinci® Surgical System, a minimally invasive robotic surgery system that uses complex mechanics, replaceable instruments and accessories, and enhanced three-dimensional visualization to extend surgical technique and precision beyond the limits of the human hand.

This is a unique role that requires multiple areas of engineering prototype development and release to production. The Electrical Engineering Manager will lead the electrical engineering aspects of new endoscope and endoscope controller designs throughout the development and qualification phases. The successful candidate will have the capability to work with and lead engineers to resolve complex design and manufacturing issues, as well as the ability to work in an interdisciplinary organization to deliver integrated products. Sound engineering judgment and ability to organize and lead engineers, a strong sense of shared responsibility / shared reward is required as well as a commitment to high product quality.

The Electrical Engineering Manager supports the Multiport Vision Engineering team and works closely with other engineering and clinical disciplines to achieve desired outcomes in the areas of electrical engineering. Excellent communication, strong sense of ownership and organization skills are critical for success in this role.

Roles and Responsibilities:

This key technical management role will guide and mentor a talented R&D engineering team responsible developing the next generation of electro-opto-mechanical product designs. The leadership requires the ability to collaborate across functions to clarify the customer need, brainstorm engineering approaches, and select winning concepts that balance performance, program risk, and commercial viability. The leader will have a track record of effectively working closely with the electrical, optical, and mechanical teams to collaboratively develop these novel designs.


  • Build and mentor a strong team of self-directed engineers. Encourage an ambitious, exploratory, creative mindset in the team

  • Make sound decisions when faced with the time pressures and ambiguous or incomplete information typical of research and development

  • Work with Multiport Vision PMO to deliver risk-reduced concepts to the next engineering team in the product development flow

  • Collaborate across the organization to assure that proposed designs meet the needs of all customers : manufacturing, quality assurance, regulatory, human factors, clinical, supply chain

  • Represent Electrical Engineering on cross-functional project teams; keep track and report / present project status

  • Other duties as needed and identified by the functional manager

Qualifications
Required Skills and Experience

  • Work experience and ability to thrive in a fast-paced engineering / R&D environment

  • Experience with leading / executing electrical engineering projects while making sound decisions on engineering - business tradeoffs

  • Familiarity with a broad range of electronic components and hardware, including analog, power, microcontrollers, logic, and communication interfaces; Familiarity and experience with PCB/PCBA fabrication and asssembly

  • Demonstrated ability to distill the requirements into clear goals and actions for the team that delivers improved products for our customers in a timely manner

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; Strong organizational skills

  • Strong sense of ownership and a drive to achieve outcomes aligned with organization's goals


Required Education and Training

  • Minimum B.S. degree in Engineering discipline

  • At least 2 years experience leading / managing an engineering team.

  • Experience in electrical design or manufacturing for complex electro-mechanical products


Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Prior experience in medical device design and manufacturing

  • Track record of leading and developing sustainable teams

  • Ability to effectively collaborate with a team that is split among geographic regions, organize effective collaboration in time zones with limited work-day overlap, and balance cultural differences among contributors

  • Demonstrated ability to mentor contributors on processes, implement processes for product safety and quality, and drive product and process improvements that lead to improving patient outcomes, surgeon experience, and business performance

We provide market-competitive compensation packages, inclusive of base pay, incentives, benefits, and equity. It would not be typical for someone to be hired at the top end of range for the role, as actual pay will be determined based on several factors, including experience, skills, and qualifications. The target salary ranges are listed.

Base Salary Range Region 1: $165,600 USD - $238,400 USD
Base Salary Range Region 2: $140,800 USD - $202,600 USD
Shift: Day
Travel: 10% of the time
